Losing School Rights?

For years now school has preached to us "YOU LOSE ALL RIGHTS IN SCHOOL." It's incredibally obnoxious and intimidating. Obviously, we know we can't REALLY plead the fifth when she asks for our homework but honestly, do we really lose rights in school? In the end, taken at court, who do you think would win when you speak your opinion about, for example, about gay rights after your teacher makes a vulgar comment about homosexuals. They yell at you for talking back. You say freedom of speech. They say you lose all rights in school. I don't know what I'm getting at, haha. I just don't know if you understand what I'm saying. Any opinions? Agreements?
Answers:
Your Rights are left at the door of your school; But then so are some of the rights of the teaching staff as well as other staff members: Freedom of speech; when you raise your hand Teachers call upon you to make a clear and understandable answer, or ask a prudent question but with the proper decorum. You do not have the right to Yell Fire where there is none in a public building and call it Free Speech same go's in the class room. As well a teacher dose not and should never comment on a persons race, sex, reliegon,or any sexual preference, that in it's self is a violation of Federal Laws, and Are Not Allowed In A Place Of Schools
Schools do have the right to check lockers without the concent of the student and they do have the right to maintain order in their schools ( they could even enforce a School quiet zone at any time even walking from class room to class room or even in the lunch rooms and lounges). But at the same time they do not have the right to lock you in the schools. You do have rights in an open Forum that the hole School is involved with. If you want to know more about your Rights in school go to class and learn.
Sorry to sound so hard but it takes schooling and a lot of it to really know your Rights.
Good Luck To You.
ITs not losing rights so much as students and teachers not respecting each otehr. If everyone respected and paid attention we would all be fuine, finish our homework, and not have to be punished and compain about losing rights. There is too much freedom now, not enough rules that people follow Like teens and drugs and booze. Abuse is everywhere and noone does anything about it bu shrug and go, oh well, kids will be kids.
I partly agree with James in the essence of that it isn't truly about losing rights but them implementing rules to make sure teachers and students interact in a respectful environment. If you have teachers who make offensive comments, you should discuss it with that teacher, tell them it makes you feel uncomfortable, or politely ask them to be polite. Their opinion might reflect adversely from what you believe but they are entitled to it BUT not in a discussion during school hours. They themselves could be severely punished for doing so. You have your rights never forget that, but dispute those things in a respectful civil manner, going through the school hierarchy...because talking back to a teacher is no way to show that you're mature adult worth listening to. All the rules are in place for those who would have trouble without such things and cause disturbance to the learning environment but you don't strike me as such a person. Good luck!

As I like to say...never be silenced and be open minded.
What do you think your rights are, besides free speech? And even free speech has its limits (you don't have the right to disrupt a lesson with conversation or to come to school in a swimming suit). So the quick answer to your question is no, you don't automatically lose all your "rights" (to the extent they are rights at all), but your rights are subject to the school's legitimate interest in maintaining its functions and an environment conducive to learning.
